Have you noticed during the winter your energy level drops and you go into what has been called “ winter blues”? Did you know that on average, we spend over 90% of our times indoors, regardless of the season? Have you noticed days that you spend a few minutes outdoors and in the nature, how much more energized and happier you feel, assuming you have no allergies ;)? These are not coincidences. Science has proven that spending time outdoors will elevate your mood. Why is that? Here is two out of the hundreds of benefits that nature and sun exposure has:

Regular sunlight exposure can naturally increase the serotonin levels in your body, making you more active and alert. Serotonin can be considered a “happy” hormone, as it greatly influences an overall sense of well-being. It also helps to regulate moods, temper anxiety, and relieve depression. It is also credited with being a natural sleep aid. These are just a few of the many benefits of this happy hormone. In an article published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), exposure to bright light is seen as an approach to increase serotonin without the use of drugs. Everybody is looking for a better night’s sleep, happiness and stress relievers, here is your solution and it is free. Get outdoors, get into nature, don’t be afraid of the sun.

The most notable benefit of exposure to sunlight is its ability to boost your body’s vitamin D supply. The NIH says at least 1,000 different genes that control every tissue in the body are linked to be regulated by vitamin D3. Did you know that getting enough vitamin D from sunlight during summer times, will reduce “winter blues”? Yes, this is a fact.

I have noticed a decrease in my energy level, and I know the reason. I was not able to spend any time outdoors because I was sick for a couple of weeks and it was rainy and cold here in Northern California. Excuses, excuses, right? But no more. Here is my focus, in fact it is listed as my priorities in my journal: my goal is to spend at least 30 minutes 2-3 times a week in nature.
